Yuliya had always been writing songs, or more, she had always been writing poems, and then later she would dig them up and put them to a tune. She had even recorded a few of them so that she could overlap the three main instruments she played: banjo, guitar, and violin. Every once in awhile she would also add a little bit of piano. Most of her songs were kept to herself and her brother though, since people didn't really like the kind of songs she wrote. She didn't write about modern romance. If she wrote about romance at all it was always old romances from long ago that people had forgotten about.
But sometimes she liked to play songs written by other people, just to have something to do and something to learn. Sometimes they wrote things that really meant something to her and she'd try her hand at converting the song to her banjo which lay in her lap as she leaned against a tree. Of course she was outside, she'd always liked outside better. She was a bit claustrophobic and there were always more interesting things outside anyway. Her white sunglasses pulled over her eyes made her so much more comfortable since they dulled her vision and made it impossible for anyone to look her in the eye. Plus, with Apollo resting his head on her lower legs pointed out in front of her, she knew she had no reason to be afraid. No one was around her, and this was good. So she began strumming, and then she even began singing. Her voice was not the kind of poppy or broadway voice everyone knew and loved. Her voice was soft and strange and ethereal, like the ghost of a bird on the first day of spring, it was melancholy and light and breathy yet strong. It was a folksy voice, which went along with her banjo, and the song she sang.
“Take me to the breaking of a beautiful dawn
Take me to the place where we come from
Take me to the end so I can see the start
There's only one way to mend a broken heart
Take me to the place where I don't feel so small
Take me where I don't need to stand so tall
Take me to the edge so I can fall apart
There's only one way to mend a broken heart
Take me where love isn't up for sale
Take me where our hearts are not so frail
Take me where the fire still owns its spark
There's only one way to mend a broken heart
Teach me how to see when I close my eyes
Teach me to forgive and to apologize
Show me how to love in the darkest dark
There's only one way to mend a broken heart
Take me where the angels are close at hand
Take me where the ocean meets the sky and the land
Show me to the wisdom of the evening star
There's only one way to mend a broken heart
Take me to the place where I feel no shame
Take me where the courage doesn't need a name
Learning how to cry is the hardest part
There's only one way to mend a broken heart.”
